What the hell is Diatomaceous Earth?

Diatomaceous earth is a remarkable, all-natural product made from tiny fossilized water plants. Diatomaceous Earth is a naturally occurring siliceous sedimentary mineral compound from microscopic skeletal remains of unicellular algae like plants called diatoms. These plants have been part of the earth's ecology since prehistoric times. It is believed that 30 million years ago the diatoms built up into deep, chalky deposits of diatomite. The diatoms are mined and ground up to render a powder that looks and feels like talcum powder to us. It is a mineral based pesticide, and much, much more. DE is approximately 3% magnesium, 33% silicon, 19% calcium, 5% sodium, 2% iron and many other trace minerals such as titanium, boron, manganese, copper and zirconium. Diatomaceous Earth is a natural (not calcined or flux calcined) compound. Diatomaceous Earth is a natural grade diatomite. However, the continual breathing of any dust should he absolutely avoided.

This DE is not the same thing as the DE used in swimming pool filters. Pool grade DE is Diatomaceous Earth
produced specifically for pool filters and it is treated with heat and other processes, causing the formerly amorphous
silicon dioxide to assume crystalline form. Pool grade DE should NEVER be used for pest control, or given or taken
internally. Swimming pool DE ranges from 60% to 70% free silica and is NOT the same as FOOD GRADE DE.

Diatomaceous earth can, and should be used for insect control, flea and lice control, fly control, bed bugs, grain and dry
food storage, parasite control in, and on animals, and humans, and as a treatment for a number of internal disorders.

Diatomaceous Earth - Feeding of Food-grade Diatomaceous Earth to Zoo Animals...
Richard Smith, Hallwood Inc., Animal Food Specialties, Grand Rapids, Michigan

A mixture of feed incorporating 2% diatomaceous earth was sent to three zoos for evaluation.  John Ball Park of Grand Rapids, Michigan; Brookfield Zoos of Chicago Illinois; and Buffalo Zoo of Buffalo, New York.  John Ball and Buffalo Zoos reported that their black bears on the special feed showed a better coat and clearer eyes.  The primates fed at the Brookfield Zoo displayed a pronounced improvement in both appearance and behavior.  Stool samples taken at all three zoos showed an absence of any internal parasites - adult or egg. Parasites in these animals were present prior to using the diatomaceous earth food mixture.

Pets: Our best friends come in all shapes and sizes. Protect them with Diatomaceous Earth. When lightly rubbed into their coats or dusted on their premises, it is very effective against fleas, ticks, lice, and other pests on pet dogs, cats, and birds. It can also be used as an organic wormer and will kill any worms or parasites the pets may have. When using as a de-wormer, mix the Diatomaceous Earth into their food as follows for at least 30 days, then every other day for maintainence:
	•	Large Cats - 1 teaspoon
	•	Kittens - 1/4 teaspoon
	•	Dogs 100 lbs + - 1-2  tablespoons
	•	Dogs 50 - 100lbs - 1 tablespoon
	•	Dogs Under 50 lbs - 1 teaspoon
	•	Mini dogs - 1/2 teaspoon

As pets get older, they also get sore joints. With Diatomaceous Earth in their diet they will feel better.  Apply to moist kennel areas to reduce odors, dry the area, and prevent pest breeding.  Deodorizing and absorption are natural functions of DE, so add to kitty litter to absorb odors and keep the litter box drier.
Household Pests:
Diatomaceous Earth is a natural, organic insect killer. Diatomaceous Earth kills by physical action and not by chemical so there is NO harm to pets or humans.  The tiny hard and sharp diatoms scratch off the insects waxy coating, causing it to dehydrate. Use Diatomaceous Earth for control of roaches, silverfish, aphids, ants, fire ants, bedbugs, lice, mites, spiders, earwigs, flies, fleas, silverfish, box elder bugs, Pubic and hair Lice, scorpions, crickets, sawfly, coddling moth, twig borer, thrips, mites,  cockroach, slugs, and snails. Additionally, it can be used for bedbugs, cabbage root flies, carrot root flies, fleas, pillbugs, ticks  and is helpful in dealing with fungus gnats. and many other insects. Diatomaceous Earth can be used in and around the home, yard, animal housing, etc.  Sprinkle a 2 inch wide border around the foundation of your house to prevent insects from entering.
Diatomaceous Earth will not harm earthworms or beneficial soil microorganisms.

Bedbugs: All over the United States we are seeing an outbreak of bedbugs. DE will not only kill the bedbugs you have, but will do it safely without chemicals. Remember-bed bugs cannot fly, so make sure bed is away from the wall and there is no bedding touching the floor. Surround each of the 4 legs of the bed with DE--this will kill them as they try to get on the bed the only way possible. Dust some DE on the matress and bedding--especially in the creases. Dust DE in the carpets and in corners of room. Remove electrical outlet covers and puff some DE inside the walls. The "Pest Pistol" works great for this. Keep this routine up for several days untill no more bed bugs.
Dust Diatomaceous Earth on all areas of the body that are infested with the Lice.  Dust your bedding and rooms you have been in with DE also.

Plant Pests:
For control of aphids, white fly, beetles, loopers, mites, snails, slugs, leaf hoppers, and others, use Diatomaceous Earth inside your home, greenhouse or outdoors on fruits, vegetables, flowers, grains and grass, up to and including day of harvest. For dry application of Diatomaceous Earth use a duster and cover entire plant, apply to both top and bottom of leaf. For young plants, as little as two pounds per acre may be adequate. For larger plants, five lbs. per acre is probably sufficient. Diatomaceous Earth will need reapplication after a rain. Applies best when there is dew or after a light rain. It is a long lasting, effective powder. The insects can not build up resistance. DE can be sprayed or whitewashed by mixing 1 cup DE with 1/2 Gallon of water.  Stir frequently and spray/paint trees, yards, and fences. Diatomaceous Earth will not harm earthworms or beneficial soil microorganisms. Wear a dust mask when applying large amounts of it.
Stored Grain and Dry Foods:
Just add 7-10 lbs. of Diatomaceous Earth to each ton of grain as it is conveyed into the storage. When added to grain, it not only makes it flow better, Diatomaceous Earth kills the bugs that are present and protects the grain from further invasions. Bugs can not become immune because they are killed by physical action, not chemical. Almost all the grain we buy has Food Grade DE in it to keep it free of pests (or at least kill them inf they’re in there). It’s safe for human consumption.
Any food grade diatomaceous earth uses other than those approved by the EPA, FDA, or USDA are strictly reports of what hundreds of users have done with diatomaceous earth.

Diatomaceous Earth - Human Use
In 1939, the Nobel Prize winner for chemistry, Professor Adolf Butenant, proved that life can not exist without Silica.
In the 2003 book "Water & Salt" Dr. Barbara Hendel states: "Silica it the most important trace mineral for human health!"
Silica plays an important role in many body functions and has a direct relationship to mineral absorption. The average human body holds approximately seven grams of silica, a quantity far exceeding the figures for other important minerals such as iron.
Lower High Blood Pressure...
Of the thousands of people that are using Diatomaceous Earth, everyone that has high blood pressure has reported that it has gone down.  I am not just talking a few points---I am talking about LIFE-CHANGING numbers.  Doctors are amazed, and you will be too.
 Lower high Cholesterol...
Just as Diatomaceous Earth has been lowering blood pressure--it has also been lowering cholesterol.  Most are reporting 40-60 points lower after only 2 weeks on DE.
   •	Silica lowers bad cholesterol and raises good
	•	Silica fades age spots
	•	Silica stimulates metabolism for higher energy levels
	•	Diatomaceous earth has a negative charge and bacteria has a positive charge. It is believed that diatomaceous earth sweeps bacteria out of the body by trapping it in it's honeycomb shaped skeletal form.
	•	Silica supplementation helps repair and maintain vital lung tissues and protects them from pollution. By maintaining or restoring the elasticity of lung tissues, silica reduces inflammation in bronchitis.
	•	It acts as a cough decreasing agent. Silica tones the upper respiratory tract (nose, pharynx, larynx) and reduces swelling because of its positive action on the lymphatic system.
	•	Silica supplementation keeps menopause free of stress and helps to prevent many unwanted side-effects of menopause
	•	Silica works with other antioxidants to prevent premature aging and to preserve youthfulness.
	•	Silica can help prevent kidney stones and heal infections of the urinary tract. It is a natural diuretic which can increase excretion of urine by 30 percent, thus flushing the water-excreting system and restoring normal function to these vital organs.
	•	The presence of sufficient silica in the intestines will reduce inflammation of the intestinal tract. It can cause disinfection in the case of stomach and intestinal mucus and ulcers. Silica can prevent or clear up diarrhea and its opposite, constipation.
	•	Silica will help normalize hemorrhoidal tissues.
	•	In regulating and normalizing the bowels, silica has a pleasant side effect; it can alleviate lower back pain, which often troubles the elderly.
	•	Silica proves effective with female discharge, abscesses and ulcers in the genital area and cervix, as well as mastitis (especially for breast feeding mothers).
	•	The intake of silica acts as a supportive treatment for inflammation of the middle ear. Because of the beneficial effectiveness on the lymphatic system, silica can be used for swelling of the lymph nodes in the throat.
	•	Has anti-inflammatory disinfecting, absorbing and odor binding effects.
	•	Silica can normalize circulation and regulate high blood pressure (hypertension).
	•	Silica can decrease vertigo, headache, tinnitus (buzzing of the ears) and insomnia.
	•	Silica can help diabetes by promoting synthesis of elastase inhibitor by the pancreas.
	•	Silica can help arterial disease by strengthening the blood vessels. Studies confirm that with age, silica disappears from the aorta, the heart's key blood vessel thus weakening its critical connective tissue and resulting in a greater cardiac risk.
	•	Silica can help prevent Tuberculosis.
	•	By improving the elasticity of the joints, silica helps rheumatism.
	•	Silica has inhibitory effects on coronary diseases.
	•	Silica can help avoiding or alleviating Alzheimers disease by preventing the body from absorbing aluminum and may flush out aluminum from the tissues. Silica can stimulate the immune system.

Human Dosages:
Daily silica needs of humans are 20-30 mg. In Years past, our bodies would get enough silica from our diet. Unfortunately, many of the foods we now eat have lost their nutritional value due to soil nutrient depletion, food processing, and chemicals. Supplemental use of Diatomaceous Earth is a good idea for total body health.
People are taking 1 or 2 heaping tablespoons of Diatomaceous Earth every day, or two weeks on, two weeks off. 1 heaping tablespoon per day should do it.  Mix it with grapefruit juice. Others are mixing it with water, soda pop, juice, or whatever liquid they enjoy. Some are even putting DE in protein shakes, applesauce and yogurt. Diatomaceous Earth that is Food Grade is very pure. There is no unpleasant taste. Since it will not dissolve, stirring several times while drinking will prevent settling. Some have experienced higher energy levels, so it is probably better not to take it right before sleeping. No worry about getting too much, any excess silica not needed by the body is automatically eliminated through the blood stream, kidneys and intestines.
Are there any safety concerns with DE?
Yes, you must wear a dust mask when applying it as it can irritate the mucous membranes in the nose and mouth. Once the DE dust has settled it won't bother you.

Buying Diatomaceous Earth:
Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth can be purchased in health food stores for fifteen to twenty dollars a pound. It can be found on the internet for five to twelve dollars a pound... If that sounds high to you, it is!
Go to your local, or closest farm/feed store and buy, or order a 50 pound bag of Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth for about twenty dollars (.40 cents a pound). It’s a lifetime supply.
Your short/long time planning, should absolutely include a 50 pound bag of DE (and a dust mask).
