This DFI Course teaches the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude for the safe and proper use of a shotgun in shooting at both stationary and moving targets, and the shotgun in the role of home defense. Firearms and ammunition will be provided. Students may bring their own shotgun and ammunition if they wish.

This course is 5 hours long and includes classroom and live fire range time learning how to handle and fire shotguns at stationary and moving targets. Students learn the rules for safe gun handling; shotgun parts and operation; shotgun shell components and selection; shotgun and shell malfunctions; shooting

fundamentals; range rules; shooting at straight away and angled targets; cleaning and maintenance; home/self defense basics, appropriate barrel lengths and choke selection, the pros and cons of various action types, shotgun accessories and their usefulness, appropriate gauge and ammunition selection, lights and lasers, and continued opportunities for skill development. Participants will be coached in the best methods of controlling shotgun recoil, as well as the zones of tactical employment of the shotgun with a focus on home defense.  Students will be instructed in basic methods of shotgun weapon retention at close quarters.  Shotgun wounding effects on the human body are also discussed.  A low-light simulation exercise is included. This is a Live Fire Self Defense Course.

Students will receive the comprehensive Guide to the Basics of Shotgun handbook, Gun Safety Rules brochure, DFI Course materials, Student DVD, and Course Completion Certificate.  Firearms and ammunition, as well as refreshments will be provided.
