Foot Pounds of Energy on the target is an effective way of measuring a bullets estimated effectiveness

Simply enter the bullet weight in grains and its velocity in

feet per second (FPS), and press calculate to determine Foot Pounds of Muzzle Energy (FPE)

Muzzle energy is the kinetic energy of a bullet as it is expelled from the muzzle of a firearm. It is often used as a rough indication of the destructive potential of a given load. The heavier the bullet and the faster it moves, the higher its muzzle energy and in general, the more effective it should be.


However, muzzle energy alone cannot be used as the sole criteria to judge the effectiveness of a bullet. There are just too many variables, such as bullet diameter (caliber), penetration to vitals, how many good hits you are able to land on the target in the time allotted, and most importantly, shot placement.


The difference in energy a bullet carries when used at normal self defense ranges (7 yards or less) and the energy generated at the muzzle are negligible, so for all intent and purpose, at 7 yards or less they will be equal, or immeasurably close, to the energy at the muzzle.
