Law Enforcement qualification courses serve as a critical benchmark of competency for the average armed citizen.  Without professional training, your average shooter isn’t likely to pass.  I regularly advise students to shoot their local police, or a federal law enforcement qualification course, have it signed and witnessed by a Certified Instructor, and save the target. If you ever have to shoot someone in self defense and your abilities are questioned by the court, it makes a pretty powerful statement to say:
“As a responsible gun owner, I didn’t feel comfortable carrying my gun in public until my skill level was at least as good as local, State and Federal officers who patrol my community and protect our nation.  I took a comprehensive training course with a Certified Instructor and I successfully completed the FBI’s pistol qualification course.  Here’s the target to prove it.”
That might shut down any line of questioning that disparages your skill set, or paints you as someone who is “reckless” or “wants to shoot someone”.
The courses of fire that have most perceived value to a jury are those shot by various branches of Federal law enforcement.  While some citizens in your jury pool might have some bad experiences with local police, agencies like the FBI usually have a sterling reputation.  It would be very helpful to demonstrate that you have met the FBI pistol qualification standards.
In fact, using the FBI standards might make a lot of sense for the average armed citizen.  The FBI recently changed their qualification course to better reflect the scenarios where agents have fired their weapons.  Since the FBI agents are plain clothed and carry concealed, the situations where they use their guns are very similar to the situations that the average armed citizen might experience.
This Course of Fire (COF) consists of 60 rounds. A maximum score of 60 points is possible. 48 points are required to achieve a passing score. Targets will be engaged from 3 yards, to 25 yards. Firing positions include standing and kneeling, including both dominant hand, and weak hand. A timer will be employed, and each stage must be completed within the time prescribed.

The Student will run this 60 round FBI-POC2013 Course of Fire with an FBI-QIT99TCA target three times. Their best qualifying score will be noted on their Completion Certificate. Time and scoring will be strictly held to FBI standards and all FBI protocols will be followed. Again, no Certificate will be issued to anyone who does not meet the required minimum 48 point scoring criteria. All stages will begin from the concealed holster.

Required: 250+ rounds of appropriate ammunition, appropriate handgun and strong side concealed carry holster (no shoulder or cross draw holsters), brimmed hat, weather appropriate clothing, eye and ear protection (available if needed), and at least 2 magazines/speed loaders and spare magazine carrier (available if needed). A DFI FBI Qualification Course Completion Certificate, and snacks/refreshments will be provided.
